WEDNESDAY, Feb. 21, 2013 (HealthDay News) -- The Food and Drug Administration is approving a new drug that treats a condition that's increasingly common in older men, according to a new report.
Eli Lilly and Company officials said Thursday they believe that drugmakers may be testing the drug's potential for approval by the FDA, which has not approved a new drug for the condition.
"The Food and Drug Administration will be taking a hard look at this drug," said Dr. Aaron Kesselheim, a professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School.
"I would be very surprised if it does not," he said. "It's not a new drug. We'll be making sure that it's safe for patients."
The FDA is testing the drug on an older population, but the company says it is not expected to approve the drug for the new condition in time for its first sales year.
The FDA has not approved the drug in women, but it's thought that it could be approved in men and women.
The Food and Drug Administration has given the FDA "a hard look" at the drug's potential for approval by the FDA, according to the FDA's latest report.
"We are going to look at this very seriously," said Dr. John P. Calhoun, the agency's deputy commissioner, in a news release.
The FDA has been asked to examine the drug's potential for approval for a new condition in older men, including benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), or enlarged prostate, and male pattern baldness.
The company is not expected to take the test on women, although it is thought that it might be approved in women.
"It's very important that we do not take this drug for any other condition," said Calhoun, who is also a professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School.
The FDA is evaluating the drug on a patient population of women, he said, but the drug's safety is not a clear priority for the FDA, which will take the drug for a "first time date" before approving it later.
The agency is also reviewing the data from clinical trials for the drug, and it is not expected to approve it for the condition in the first year of marketing.
The FDA said that it is evaluating the data, based on its own experience, and it is not planning on running any trials later this year. In addition, the agency is not expected to approve the drug for the condition until at least next year, the FDA said.
The agency said that patients should "always be cautious and should be counseled when using drugs," which may lead to side effects.
In the study, the FDA found that women taking Levitra, a drug that treats an enlarged prostate, had about a 30 percent increased risk of developing an enlarged prostate.
Levitra is prescribed to treat erectile dysfunction, a condition in which a man cannot obtain and keep an erection.
The drug was found to increase the risk of an enlarged prostate and to increase the risk of BPH by about 30 percent, according to the FDA. A study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association in May found that men taking the drug had a 69 percent increased risk of developing the condition, compared with men taking the drug only for BPH.
The FDA also found that a small group of patients taking the drug also had an increased risk of developing the condition, with about a 20 percent increased risk.
The study looked at data from over 1,100 patients over the study period, and it included about 1,000 patients, including patients taking other drugs that may cause a condition, such as nitrates or the anti-ulcer medicine nitroprusside.
The FDA said that the data may not be as strong as other drugs that cause an enlarged prostate, but that it is still looking at possible side effects.
The drug's effect on an enlarged prostate is not clear, but doctors can tell patients whether they should start taking the drug, or whether they should stop taking the drug.
The FDA said that it is not expected to approve Levitra for the condition until the drug is approved in women.
In addition, the FDA is not expected to approve any of the other drugs that are taken for BPH, according to the agency.
The drug's safety is not a priority for the FDA, which is reviewing the data, and the drug is not expected to take a drug's first-year approval for BPH before sales are out.
